How does GPS work?

GPS is a technology that utilizes a system of satellites orbiting the earth to accurately locate your exact position. A GPS receiver interprets signals sent from these satellites to calculate the device’s current distance from the satellites themselves. By knowing the exact locations of the satellites, as well as your current distance from at least 4 satellites, the GPS receiver uses a mathematical principle known as Trilateration to determine your current location.

The navigation software component takes the position calculated from the GPS receiver and represents that on an image of the map data. The software then uses complex algorithms to calculate the best way to get from your current location to your destination, within the bounds of the map data (i.e. staying on the roads rather than a straight line).

There are a number of resources online that further explain how GPS technology works. One simplified explanation is available from How Stuff Works.

Do the maps have truck routes for high or heavy vehicles?

No. Bridge heights and heavy vehicle road restrictions are not currently supported in the maps or the Destinator application software. These features may be included in future releases.

I can’t find a POI that I know is there. Why is that?

Although the map providers update their maps regularly, it is possible that your POI had not been included in the POI map data because it was not available until after the collection of POI map data, or the POI does not fall into a defined POI category.

Can I change the distance for the alerts to upcoming turns?

Distance alerts to a selected destination are pre-defined and cannot be changed.

What is the NavStrip?

The new Destinator NavStrip is an easier way to handle your navigation tasks – all activities are under one finger. Use the arrow indicator to quickly switch the NavStrip or press the Destinator logo anchor to hide or show the NavStrip. Note: Google Satellite view is an optional feature and is subject to Google Maps API Licensing Terms and Conditions.

What is the Detour button?

Tap Route and Detour and select the detour distance to instruct Destinator to create an alternative route.

For example, if you are travelling on a major highway and are alerted by the news that there is traffic for the next 3 kilometers, you can have Destinator calculate a detour that takes you off the highway and then returns you back to the highway after a distance of 3 kilometers.

Why does Destinator route me off highways and through small side roads?

If the route type is set to Vehicle – Shortest, Destinator generates a route that is the shortest distance, but not fastest. For a metropolitan area, this could mean a route that avoids highways but includes small side roads. Also, if Avoid Highways has been selected, Destinator will generate a route that excludes highways.

You can check your Road Type settings, by tapping NavSet and Road Type.

Sometimes Destinator takes me the wrong way. Why is that?

There can be a number of reasons why it seems that the Destinator device is taking a route that appears to be the wrong way. If you have instructed Destinator to generate the quickest route, it may seem that the device’s travel instructions are counterintuitive to the way you would normally travel. Another possibility is that you have selected the correct street address, but the wrong town or city. A consequence that is not uncommon when travelling in a metropolitan region.

How do I avoid a road type?

Tap NavSet and Road Type. Select the road category to avoid (for example, Highways, Toll Roads, Ferries).

What is the difference between a Fast and Short route?

  • Vehicle-Shortest – Instructs Destinator to generate the shortest route, which may not be the quickest.
  • Pedestrian – Instructs Destinator to generate a route suitable for a pedestrian (optional).
Can I use Destinator as a Pedestrian?

Tap NavSet and tap the Pedestrian button, which instructs Destinator to generate a route suitable for a pedestrian. The following rules apply to pedestrian routes:

  • Generates a route which is not limited by vehicle constraints, such as one way streets.
  • When creating a pedestrian route, Destinator avoids highways or other roads where pedestrians cannot travel.

How can I change miles to kilometres?

Tap System and Units to change the unit of measurements.

How do I change the Time Settings?

You can change the time zone and instruct Destinator to adjust for Daylight Savings Time by tapping the Time button located on the System menu.

How can I tell whether I have a GPS Signal?

A GPS Signal is indicated when the current location indicator no longer displays the red X and GPS information is displayed on the GPS bar. On the GPS Signal screen, GPS Signal information is displayed, such as longitude, latitude, altitude, speed, and number of satellites).

Why does it sometimes take so long to get a GPS signal?

For devices with an external antenna, the “GPS not found” message means that your device is not connected to a GPS antenna or that the antenna is not properly installed.

Please check that:

  • The GPS antenna is extended or flipped up (for an external antenna only).
  • The GPS antenna has a clear view of the sky for uninterrupted GPS reception. Destinator cannot calculate the route if there is no GPS reception (for example, in a tunnel).
  • The navigation device is charged or connected to a power source, such as the cigarette lighter.
How do I connect to GPS satellites?

Destinator automatically receives data from a built-in GPS receiver to pinpoint your location. Turn on the device and start Destinator, verify that the device is receiving power (i.e. connected to the cigarette lighter or running on its charged battery). Make sure that the device has clear view of the sky. For devices with an external antenna, flip up the antenna. Destinator automatically connects to a GPS signal.

Can I navigate with my device indoors?

You cannot receive GPS signals when in a tunnel, parking structure, or indoors.

My navigation device stops working when I’m in a tunnel. Why?

The device cannot receive the GPS signal while you are driving through a tunnel. Wait until you exit the tunnel, and the GPS signal should return.

Where can I find technical support information?

Tap System and Help to display technical support information.

Where can I found the Destinator version and copyright information?

Tap System and About to display Destinator version and copyright information.

How do I change the brightness of the screen?

How many addresses can I save?

The Destinator software automatically saves the last 64 addresses in the Recent Locations. You can also save up to 64 addresses in the Favorites folder. For directions on saving addresses to your Favorites folder, see the user manual.

Why is it taking a long time to acquire a signal or why is my signal too weak?

There are many factors that may affect your GPS satellite signal such as: The weather (if it’s too cloudy, etc., your GPS may experience difficulty in acquiring a signal; you may be in a remote area where there are no reliable satellite signals available; you don’t have a clear view of the sky, etc.

The device screen froze. What do I do?

You can restart it by pushing the on/off button for a few seconds until prompted to shut down the device, and then pressing the on/off button again to restart. Please note that if you use this method, it will ERASE all previously saved route information. We are not responsible for any lost information.

Why is my screen too hard to read?

LCD screens in general can be difficult to see in the sunlight. Avoid placing the screen in direct sunlight. Also make sure that the GPS is in day mode during the daytime and night mode during evening, for easier viewing. You can do this manually or you can set your GPS to automatically switch between day and night modes.

My position on the map isn’t being updated.

The primary cause for your position to not be updated on the map is the GPS receiver does not have adequate signal from the satellites. Low signal can be easily identified by the voice prompt “Signal is too weak” and the car representing your position having a cross through it. This is commonly caused by obstruction of the GPS receiver in the form of overhead bridges, tunnels, tall buildings, severe weather conditions, dense tree cover, etc. The signal level being transmitted from the GPS satellites is extremely low and although the GPS is fitted with a highly sensitive antenna, it is still essential that the unit has a clear view of as much of the sky as possible. If your unit continually loses signal, check the installation location in the car. Please note that when you first turn your GPS unit on in an open area, it may take up to 15 minutes to receive adequate signal. This time may be greatly increased if you are moving during the initial signal acquisition.

My GPS keeps saying “The GPS signal is too weak”.

Please note that when you first turn your GPS unit on in an open area, it may take up to 15 minutes to receive adequate signal. This time may be greatly increased if you are moving during the initial signal acquisition.

TIP: To decrease the signal acquisition time it is a good idea to leave the GPS switched on whilst you are driving even when you are not using it to navigate. In that way, the unit is in constant communication with the satellites and when you do need to enter a destination, the GPS will already know where you are.
