Android
An open source mobile phone platform based on the Linux operating system.
BSP
Board Support Package. A BSP is specific support code in an embedded system for a given board that conforms to a given operating system. It is commonly built with a bootloader that contains the minimal device support to load the operating system and device drivers for all the devices on the board.

CPU
Central Processing Unit or application processor.
CTIA
Cellular Technology Industry Association.
Embedded system
A microprocessor-based system that is incorporated into a larger device and is dedicated to responding to external events by performing specific tasks. Examples of such devices include antilock brakes, video game systems, fax machines and industrial robots.
GPS
Global Positioning System.
GSM
Global Systems for Mobile communication, a digital cellular communications standard.
HLOS
High-Level Operating System.
HSDPA
High-Speed Downlink Packet Access.
ISV
Independent Software Vendor.
Java
A high-level operating system using independent programming language developed by Sun Microsystems, designed for handheld devices and set-top boxes.
Linux
A freely distributable implementation of UNIX that runs on a number of hardware platforms.
MVNO
Mobile Virtual Network Operator.
ODM
Original Design Manufacturer. An ODM is a company that manufactures a product which ultimately will be branded by another firm for sale.
OEM
Original Equipment Manufacturer. A company that manufactures and sells products based on original designs through a variety of distribution channels for either consumer or industrial consumption.
OHA
Open Handset Alliance. An business alliance established in 2007, led by Google including mobile handset makers, application developers, mobile carriers and chip makers to develop open standards for mobile devices.
PCC
Product Creation Community. A community created by Symbian for the S60 operating system.
PDA
Personal Digital Assistant.
PND
Personal or Portable Navigation Device.
POI
Point of Interest. A specific point location on a map that indicates a place of interest or use.
PTCRB
PCS Type Certification Review Board.
RIL
Radio Interface Layer.
S60
Series 60. An operating system created by Symbian.
UI
User Interface.
UX
User Experience.
WEP
Microsoft Windows Embedded Partner.
Windows Embedded CE
Microsoft compact operating system used in low cost and typically handheld or battery operated devices.
Windows Mobile
Microsoft operating system for mobile and wireless handsets including smart phones, PDAs and media players.
